The space behind a sofa is often left unused, but it can easily become a practical and attractive part of the room with a sofa table. This is especially useful when the sofa is placed in the middle of the room rather than against a wall.
This project is a custom-made Suar wood console table by Blue Sea Wood, built to fit the customer’s actual space so it can sit neatly behind the sofa.
Single-Slab Suar Wood Top with One Live Edge
The highlight of this table is the top, made from a single solid Suar / Rain Tree wood slab, rather than several pieces of wood glued together. This allows the natural grain to flow continuously across the entire tabletop.
We designed the two long edges differently to suit how the table would be used:
- The visible side has a natural live edge, preserving the organic shape and character of the wood.
- The side facing the sofa has a straight edge, allowing the table to sit closer to the back of the sofa.
This is one of the advantages of custom-made furniture. You don’t have to choose between a completely live-edge or straight-edge table. Each side can be designed according to where and how the table will actually be used.
Solid Wood Slab Legs for a Seamless Look
For the base, the customer chose solid Suar wood slab legs instead of metal legs. This gives the table a simple, cohesive appearance, with natural wood extending from the tabletop down to the legs.
Placed behind the sofa, the table becomes more than just a functional surface—it also works as part of the room’s interior design.
What Can a Sofa Table Be Used For?
A sofa table makes good use of otherwise empty space behind the sofa. It can be used for table lamps, vases, books, decorative items, or everyday essentials that you want to keep within easy reach.
For homes with limited space, the table can be made relatively narrow, providing useful surface space without taking up too much of the walkway.
This style of table is also not limited to use behind a sofa. The same design can work as a wall console table, hallway table, or entryway table.
Why Is a Custom-Made Sofa Table a Good Choice?
Sofas come in many different heights and lengths, and every home has a different amount of space available behind them.
A ready-made table may be too long, too short, too deep, or simply the wrong height for the sofa.
With a custom-made table, the length × depth × height can be made specifically for your space. You can also choose between live edges, straight edges, or a combination of both, as shown in this project.
