This 3-metre dining table is one of our recent custom projects at Blue Sea Wood. What makes it special is the tabletop: two large, solid Suar wood slabs placed side by side, with straight-cut inner edges, a narrow gap down the centre and natural live edges along the outside.

The customer chose a dark walnut-tone finish and matching solid wood panel legs. Once assembled in the dining room, the rich wood colour provided a lovely contrast to the light-coloured chairs, flooring and marble details.

Choosing Two Suar Wood Slabs for a 3-Metre Tabletop

Before production, we sent the customer photos of the available Suar wood slabs and marked out the proposed 3-metre cutting lengths. This allowed them to see exactly which sections of wood would be used for the table.

Every Suar slab has its own grain and natural colour variations. The customer selected the preferred sections and asked us to keep the finished colour of both slabs as consistent as possible.

After kiln drying, we planed and prepared the slabs, trimming the inner edges straight so they could sit neatly alongside each other while preserving the natural contours on the outer edges.

Bow Tie Joints Add a Distinctive Detail

Another feature of this table is the use of bow tie joints along the centre of the tabletop.

A bow tie joint is a butterfly-shaped wooden inlay. Besides its decorative appearance, this traditional woodworking detail can also help restrain movement across a split or joint in certain applications.

For this design, we left a small gap between the two slabs, creating a visible line down the middle. The bow tie details give that centre line a handcrafted character without taking attention away from the natural grain.

A Dark Walnut-Tone Finish That Highlights the Grain

The customer wanted a dark walnut colour, so we prepared a finish sample for approval before completing the tabletop.

With the walnut-tone finish applied, the flowing lines and natural patterns of the Suar wood became more prominent, especially when light falls across the surface.

The two slabs still retain their individual grain patterns, as real wood should. Using a similar finish on both helps bring them together visually while preserving their natural character. The table is made from Suar wood with a walnut-tone finish, not walnut timber.

Matching Solid Wood Panel Legs

For the base, the customer chose solid wood panel legs, finished in the same walnut tone as the tabletop.

Steel mounting brackets were fitted beneath the top to attach the legs securely. The broad wooden panels complement the substantial tabletop and give the finished piece a cohesive, all-wood appearance.

Once delivered and assembled, the panel legs felt well proportioned to the size and thickness of the 3-metre tabletop.
